   The Rock Band

Folk Rock Band-Ret-4w-light.jpg

Glenn sometimes introduced this band as "The Surfers," which was his idea of what we four would be doing when we weren't rockin' out. But Florida's surf isn't like California's, therefore we called ourselves "The Rock Band." Nothing more catchy came along, so that's what we were. Brownie sang vocals and wielded the tambourine. I (Michael Roy, the omniscient narrator of this site) sang, and played a very un-rock-band-like acoustic 12-string folk guitar, giving it the one stingy mic we usually were allotted. Rick Whitney played electric bass and actually had an amp. Jerry Degennaro sang, and added his measly snare drum. This was one rock band that did not endanger the eardrums: exactly nobody would ever have to call the police on us.

Amazingly, we have a short audio clip of The Rock Band Surfer Dudes. We are Singing "For Your Love" by the Yardbirds, released in 1965, so we were, at the very least, hip with the times: the Far East tour was in 1966. Despite all of our idiomatic problems, the Rock Band actually went over big-time with the U.S. soldiers: we were singing something right off the rock charts, and the G.I. audiences appreciated it.
