The University of Miami Singing Hurricanes

Glenn Draper came to the University of Miami in 1960 and founded the Singing Hurricanes. It was a special chorale to sing not only standard high and low choral, but popular and Broadway music, patriotic, folk, gospel, and a wide diversity of choral idioms. The Singing Hurricanes became the favorite college show glee with U.S.O., and they made many trips overseas, singing to troops stationed all over Greenland, Europe, and the Far East. They were so well-received by U.S. soldiers on their worldwide tours, that U.S.O. suspended its requirement that a college group must wait three years between international tours, and allowed the SHs to travel as often as feasible. Subsequently, between 1961 and 1966, the Singing Hurricanes made tours to Greenland, Europe twice, and one trip to the Far East. Each tour (except for Greenland) lasted about two months.
